All boats – big or small
It’s also a common misconception that you can only get boat finance in Brisbane for the big ticket items. As a boutique brokerage, we understand the local boat market better than anyone. That’s why we’re perfectly positioned to offer an extensive range of boat finance options tailored to Brisbane’s unique position as a boating mecca. That means we offer finance options for boat purchases from as little as $5000 and up.
We’ll take care of the paperwork so you can focus on the more important aspects of boat ownership. Here’s a few tips to get you on your way.
Marine licences in Brisbane: recreational boat and personal watercraft licences
Chances are you’ll need a licence before your head out on the water. If you’re using your boat for recreational purposes and it has an engine capacity greater than 4.5kw you must have a recreational boat licence. More stringent requirements apply if you’re operating a boat for commercial or trade activities or tourism.
If you want to use a personal watercraft such as a jet ski, you’ll need both a recreational marine licence AND a personal watercraft licence.
You can apply for a licence if you’re over the age of 16. You must have either completed a BoatSafe Course or have a valid, recognised interstate or overseas equivalent licence.
You can apply for a recreational marine licence or personal watercraft licence at either:
- Transport and Motoring Service Centres across QLD, or
- at some QGAP (Queensland Government Agency Program) Service Centres (in rural and remote communities)Find out more about marine licences here
Getting the right skills down pat – BoatSafe Courses
BoatSafe Courses are offered across QLD and cover both theoretical and practical instruction in the essential areas of skills and knowledge for safe boat operation.
You can find a recognised and accredited BoatSafe training provider in your area at www.qld.gov.au/transport/boating/licences/boatsafe/
Registering a boat in Brisbane
If you own a boat or personal watercraft (such as a jetski) you must register it if it has an engine capacity of 3kw or more. Special requirements apply to boats used for non-recreational purposes and boats that are 15 metres or more in length.
If you’re buying a boat, you need to ensure that the registration is transferred into your name within 14 days.
If your boat’s registered in Queensland, you must comply with obligations to carry certain safety equipment. Depending on the boat, that could include:
- flares and smoke signals
- EPIRBS (Emergency position-indicating radio-beacon station)
- inflatable lifejackets, and
- fire extinguishers.
For more information about the nitty gritty of making boat ownership a reality you’ll find the Queensland Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide here
Sounds expensive? In some cases we can tailor a finance option for you that can incorporate your safety equipment, making it easier to get out on the water faster!
Checking before you buy
If you’re buying a boat or personal watercraft from a private seller you need to make sure that it’s unencumbered. In other words, that no-one has an interest in it that might put you at risk of repossession. To ensure your boat has clear title, you should check its history via the Personal Property Securities Register and obtain a certificate for your records at www.ppsr.gov.au
